  • April 12, 2008  -  For those who have not heard, sadly, Rita Buck passed away yesterday evening on April 11th.

Rita was a terrific person with a great smile and awesome personality.  As a three time "first lady" of the CYC and an active participant at the club, her presence was always a pleasure and will surely be missed!

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Larry Buck and his daughters.

The wake is Sunday at Carters in Croton from 2pm to 6pm.  The funeral and burial will occur on Monday.

    The Journal News Writes This

CROTON-ON-HUDSON - Paul Hoffman, the acting village justice and a pioneer in the field of computers and the law, died Monday.

Hoffman, 74, was found in his office at the time of his death, caused by a heart attack.

An early student of computers who once fixed big mainframes the size of refrigerators, Hoffman wrote "The Software Legal Book," a standard reference in the field, one he updated annually.

A colleague and attorney, Karl Milde, said he was a recognized authority on computer law but always maintained an air of modesty.

"He was like an old country lawyer, very friendly and honest, what you want in a lawyer. And he helped a lot of people," said Milde, a partner in a law firm specializing in patent law and intellectual property.

Hoffman was born in Harrisburg, Pa., on Dec. 12, 1933, to Paul and Lucy Rose Shafer Hoffman. During the Korean War, he served with the Army's 82nd Airborne Division based in the United States. He graduated from Gettysburg College and Harvard Law School.

Hoffman was Croton-on-Hudson's acting justice since 1991, serving on the bench once a month and on an on-call basis. He was previously a member of the village Board of Trustees and a member of the Croton-Harmon Board of Education. He enjoyed sailing on the Hudson River, and his household hosted exchange students from around the world.

He is survived by his wife, the former Pat Rudisill, whom he married in 1958, who lives in Croton. He is also survived by four children and 17 grandchildren.

Visitation will take place tomorrow at Dorsey Funeral Home in Ossining from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A memorial service will be held there at 11 a.m. Saturday.

  • March 25, 2008 - SAD NEWS - Its with a heavy heart we regret to inform you a longtime member and great friend of CYC passed away yesterday evening.  Paul will be fondly remembered for his cap and his pipe.  Even when he won the brass anchor award for falling in during a work party, his pipe surfaced, still lit way before Paul did.  Paul was famous for traveling the river and working from his boat a good part of the summer.  Twice we've pulled into Catskill Creek and Roundout Creek to be greeted by Paul who was surfing the river and working from his WiFi.  If you've never been engaged in a conversation with Paul, you've missed out on one of life's great treasures.  Funeral Services will be on Friday March 28 from 2-4 and 7-9 at Dorsey Funeral Home in Ossining.  A private internment will be Saturday with a reception at CYC, at 12:30pm.  The Croton Yacht Club would like to extend our deepest sympathies and prayers to the Hoffman family.

  • March 15, 2008 - We expect a full work party.  With some luck, the pile driver will be in  the water and ready to go for Saturday morning.  That means we have to align and pin the docks.  For those new members, it's not the rain or cold that stops a work party, it's the wind.  Show up at 8am or call to see if we're working.  Work parties begin at 8am.

  • March 05, 2008 - Welcome to our new member Rob.  We have one more application and if accepted, this would make five in a row bringing our total membership up to 60!

  • March 01, 2008 - Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Clause and he is Irish!  This year's St.  Patrick's Day party is being hosted By Kenny S.  It will be on March 15th, starting at 6pm, band starts at 7pm.  $20 per person for the band and food, drinks are the usual cheap bar prices!!  For more information - go here.
